Pewter History

The soft sheen of pewter has attracted the eye of man since the beginning of written history. It is not known when pewter was first made, but we know that bronze, which is similar, was made as early as 3200 BC. We assume that somewhere between the beginnings of the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age, two thousand years later, a maker of bronze changed his mixture of metals and discovered pewter. Natural resources of tin, lead and copper were used. For centuries, pewter was a valued possession in Europe and later in America. Pewter ranked with gold and silver as a family treasure. Pewter keeps its original soft appearance through a very slow oxidizing process that darkens gently, but does not tarnish like silver. It takes on an antique look which is highly desirable, giving contrasts of dark and light areas. This brings out details of sculpting.
